Navy veteran turns military experiences into historical fiction series ahead of Memorial Day
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) — As Memorial Day approaches, one retired military veteran is using storytelling to shine a light on the realities many soldiers face both during and after war.
Ray Deptula, a 24-year-old U.S. Naval aviator veteran, recently released his historical fiction novel A Dog Before a Soldier, a book inspired by both his own military experience and the stories of countless service members he encountered throughout his career.
Set during the American Revolution, the novel follows Jack, a young British soldier trying to survive war while navigating difficult moral choices and hardship.
“That is what happened to me personally, and the main character of my book, Jack, is like that, so I wanted to write a story about a soldier that I’ve just seen way too many times.”
